Cleaveland Pear tree question?

I planted a Cleveland pear tree last year. My neighbors also have pear trees. I have no idea of the variety. My Cleveland pear is now bearing fruit (cross pollination i assume) but now my tree appear stressed. The leaves are not "fully open" rather then "fully open leaves" the leaves on my tree are only open as I will describe as a "V" . any insight?

there are several possibilities on what is happening to you tree. one of the most common is it might be under watered. even though its been in the ground for a year it might still need help with water especially if you are in a warmer region. sprinklers rarely help because they only really water the top few inches of the soil.

i suggest taking a hose and setting the water on low and set it next to the trunk for about ten min.  this will help get water to the feeder roots that are down deeper.

and if that doesnt do the trick, try fertilizing. any kind of fruit tree fertilizer will do. the stakes are great because they will fertilize for a few months. it is common for a tree to stress itself just to make fruit-its how they spread their seed of course.

Cleveland pear trees to my knowledge  are ornamental ONLY!  They are just like the Bradford pear..they produce fruit the size of a peanut.  The birds will eat them (the tiny fruits) in the winter when they can't find other food sources.

The only thing I actually know is the trees are disease resistant.

They are susceptible to breakage and splitting in storms they have a shallow root system

I know from first hand experience the hazards of Cleveland and Bradford pear trees.   Lost 4 in a storm last year.

If the leaves are curled, it could be as simple as too little water.  However, if the leaves are rolled, you should open the rolled leaves to check for bugs living inside them.

Do the odd leaves have a strange color?  If they're turning black (like they have been burned), your tree could be suffering from fire blight.  If so, you'll want to cut off the damaged growth and dispose of, then treat the tree with a Streptomycin spray.
