Coconuts [in depth]?

There is little information about coconuts that I can find on the internet. I have a few questions for a report that i'm doing, I apologize that there are so many.

1. What do the seeds look like/ are the coconuts seeds themselves?

2. What does the fruit look like?/ Isn't the coconut part the fruit?

3. What parts of the plan are edible, and what do they look like?

4. What does the roots resemble?

I'll pick the best one for best answer quickly, I promise. Thanks again. <3

  1. 1) the seeds of the coconut is what you see at the grocery store. which is the hard outer layer with the fleshy part / milk inside

    2) The actual fruit I would say is everything that was taken off the coconut before it got to the grocery store (not edible)

    3) the edible white part and milk of the coconut is the endosperm, which is produced to nourish the embryo.

    4) I have no idea what the roots look like, never dug up a coconut tree.

  2. Hi Rayne,

There are about 35 different varieties of the coconut tree; see this link... http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/4994/...

Yes, the coconut is both the fruit that we eat AND the seed of the coconut tree and not what you normally see in the store. [NOTE: Go to this link and see the photos captioned "Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera)"... the seed labled "D" is what the seed looks like and the item labeled "A" is the inner part of the seed that we usually see in the stores... http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph10.ht...

Below are links websites that have photos of the raw seed of a coconut tree and of what we see in the market, which has the outer, fibrous husk of the mesocarp removed.

The parts of the plant that I know to be edible are the "meat" (which is actually the endosperm of the seed) and the "milk" which is located in the middle of the seed. However, most parts of the plant are useful. (Go to this link for info... http://pca.da.gov.ph/tol.html)

The roots are a cluster of long stringy extensions from the base of the tree. (See photo here... http://www.123rf.com/photo_1412313.html)

    I hope this helps.

  3. I think your best answer is to take a trip to your local Army-Navy surplus store and purchase a machete! Then you'll see why coconuts just aren't any fun anymore nohow!!!
