I have several old coins both American and foreign and was wondering how I find out a value for them.

  1. You can use the The offical Red book 2008 edition for getting a vaule on your US coins which you can get from you local book store in the hobby section or your local coin dealer.  You can use ebay to find the values of your foreign coins or you can take your foreign coins to a dealer in your area that deals in foregin coins

  2. You have a few options.

    1) Bring them to a coin collector/dealer in your area to get them appraised.  Make sure the appraiser is reputable, otherwise he might be trying to tell you it's worth a lot less so he can buy them off of you for cheap.

    2)  Buy a coin value book from a bookstore from this year.  My boyfriend found a 2008 book from Waldenbooks that has American coins in it.  You may have to check amazon.com for a book with foreign coins.  Make sure you read the introduction as well if you are new to coin collecting so that you know what the abbreviations mean and can determine what condition they are in.  It might also be helpful to do this research before going to get them appraised so you know if the quote they give you is reasonable.

    3) And finally, the lazyman's approach (which I do quite often to get a ballpark figure).  Go on eBay and see what people with similar items are selling them for and what people are actually buying them for.

In the end, if the coins are actually worth a lot of money, I would suggest investing in coin protectors for them and either keeping a safe in the house, or getting a safe deposit box at the bank to keep them protected until you are ready to cash them in.

    Good luck!
