I need some help on coming out of the blocks FAST

I'm generally fast, problem is my start is slow, my personal best is 11.5(sophomore). With a good start I know I can get better.

I'm not really sure what to do, in the beggining im in last or somewhere close but my acceleration brings me to 1st or 2nd. so any tips?

  1. you need to explode out of the blocks. your first two steps are the most important and they need to be very fast. getting your foot-speed up quickly is key.

  2. The blocks are really important in the short distances especially in the 100.

relax, relieve the tension. When you're waiting for the man to shoot the gun, take two deep breaths to get oxygen to your muscles.

don't look ahead, look at the line in front of you.

when the gun goes off, push off with your front leg. really PUSH off. Keep your body in a low position for the next 10 yards then rise slowly.

I'd recommend asking your coach to borrow a pair of blocks for the weekend. Have someone yell go for you so you can practice getting out of the blocks. Maybe suggest to your coach to have a day when you practice blocks (that's what my team does).

Maybe your coach will agree to stay with you after practice to watch your starts. He/she can tell you where to improve.

You can also videotape yourself and then compare your movements to those of pro sprinters.

Good luck, with a good fast start you should break 11 soon.
