Question:

Concerning Wireless Networks?

I use Cox as my ISP. There are three computers in my house hooked up to the same 802.11g wireless network. Whenever somebody else is on the network my ping times go really high. Is there a way I can buy a new wireless router, connect it to the same cable line and not have performance affected? Also, my PCI wireless adapter supports 802.11n, so would it really be worth it to buy an 802.11n router just to get onto the internet? My download speeds with Cox are around 1.5MB/s.

If nothing I suggested would work, can somebody please recommend a way to lower my ping while others are logged on?

I will be choosing a best answer!

  1. If you have an N adapter, then getting an N router with QOS (quality of service) controls will allow you to set the priority of each computer on the system. That allows you to make your gaming computer have higher priority thus lower ping times than other machines on the network.  If you are wired to the router N or G will make NO DIFFERENCE at all. Wired machines will always be faster no matter which wireless is used!  QOS in the router will allow priority even if wired etc.

Before you do that be sure its the other machines causing the issue. Try direct from the cable modem to your machine, then try through the router, then turn on some other machines.  You may also want to scan all your machines with Spy Bot Search and Destroy and a good Aniti Virus just to be sure they aren't transmitting to the internet all the time which is causing your issue!  (This is a major problem on many networks and its not seen by the owners as anything other than "slow" web response!)
