  1. Normally there is a corresponding mini audio input to go along with the VGA input.  If you try to plug into another audio input, there will be no sound.  The audio input would accept a stereo mini plug that'll match that of the earphone jack on your laptop.  (Be sure you're not plugging into the laptop's mic input as the ports look the same.)  A male to male stereo mini plug cable is what you'll need.  Make certain you're not using a 3-channel minijack cable.  This is only used between camcorders.

The mini plug to 3RCA isn't it.  It has three channels, not two.  The yellow is video with the white and red for stereo audio.  The mini plug to 2RCA is to connect something with an earphone jack to a system with stereo audio line in.  I haven't seen a VGA accompanied with RCA inputs.

With the right connection, adjust the volume level on your laptop as well as your TV.  This can only be done when your laptop's monitor is properly displayed on the TV.
