Question:

Consequences of name change in passport?

Will there be any issues or complications in applying for M.S or other higher studies in U.S / abroad universities if I had changed my name in passport (India), but all my school / degree certificates and work experience letters bear the old name? In such case do I need to produce any authorization or document regarding the change of name?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Absolutely no problem at all, just turn up with all your official documents to show that your name was changed. You wont strictly need to show this, though it could help your cause quite significantly if you do disclose it - it'll show US immigration that you are up front and honest.

  2. When moving abroad, the name that they consider valid is your passport name, because you go to any place there, the first document that they will verify is your passport.

However, just in case for surety, do take all your documents bearing the old name and tell the university people that you have had a name change.
