Question:

Consumption of alcohol at Kapooka

I've joined the army and I thought I had read somewhere that drinking alcohol at Basic Training was not permitted?

Can anyone confirm this?

Much appreciated, cheers

  1. I went through Kapooka in 1985. For the first 4 weeks we didn't even have a can of soft drink. However after that it became compulsory at times.

We even had a terminal p!ss up test at the end.

In todays touchy feely politically correct army though it could be the case.

Edit: Guys, back when I went through basic training was 12 weeks. Section commanders still contact counselled people as well. Oh, I also retired as a WO2. But in those days it took 4 to 6 years to make corporal depending on your corps.

  2. I went through the 4 week Reserve course early last year. They had a zero-tolerance policy on alcohol, except right at the very end after you march out.

You get limited opportunity for local leave in Wagga Wagga during the course, but with Corporals and MPs keeping an eye out in the bars it isn't worth the risk.

I've been told that during the ARA Recruit course you get the opportunity to indulge in "beer and pizza" after the high-wire confidence course, but I'd take that with a grain of salt.

  3. Zero tolerance on alcohol during basic I'm afraid. As someone else has suggested maybe during march out it would be acceptable.

I head off in October so i just looked through the information  they gave me. Surprising enough tobacco isn't prohibited.
