Question:

Containment Policy?

George Kennan’s assessment of the Soviet Union, outlined in his Long Telegram, provided the basis for the theory of containment, which guided American foreign policy through the Cold War era. In what cases did American foreign policy makers follow Kennan’s containment policy from 1946 to 1989? How successful was the United States in combating Soviet aggression during this time period? Was the policy successful, or were their shortcomings to the containment policy? Any history buffs I would appreciate your help.

  1. Kennan's containment plan in the long run certainly worked out very well especially since the US & Soviet Union didn't start WW3 (close call w/ the cuban missile crisis though).  The very bad part of the plan of the plan in the short run was the Vietnam War which cost the US dearly espeically with the loss of over 50,000 US troops.
