what is the brown layer on the top of a oxidized copper coin and why is it there?

  1. That is a layer of oxide.


  2. The brown layer would be cuprous oxide (copper(I) oxide, Cu2O).  It is there because the copper reacted with the oxygen in air - it is an "oxidized copper coin."
