Contact the Italian American Historical Society. Some fiction by Mario Puzo would be helpful. Godfather 1 is the most realistic.

Watch the Godfather movies, as they are loosely based on the Cosa Nostra, and a very well known new York crime family.

Cosa Nostra is a Sicilian criminal secret society which first developed in the mid-19th century in Sicily. An offshoot emerged on the East Coast of the United States but locating it is very hard since its operations are confidential in nature.

Of course this can't answer all your questions about it, but it'll give you a leap in the right direction. It's nothing like you may have seen in films either. We might view them as being debonair, quick witted and "businesslike", but beneath that facade was cold blooded and ruthless men. Enjoy the lawlessness, it's fascinating.
