I am a single mother living in the Metro Phoenix area of Arizona and am interested in adopting. I would have enough income in the near future to be able to support another child, but am wondering about the costs of the actual adoption and if there are any low cost options out there? help please....

  1. The way to adopt with the lowest associated fees would be to adopt through the foster system.  They will look at your income, your background, you'll take classes through them & they'll do a home visit.  Just jump through their hoops & then you'll be certified (they want to make sure the children are adopted by loving, stable, safe people).

The costs of adopting through the foster care system is very low & most states reimburse the expenses you pay out of pocket.  There's also a federal tax credit for adoption (go to http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc607.html to get the scoop on it).  Some states have adoption tax credits, too.  Some employers have adoption benefits which will help.  You can also apply for loans and grants to help adopt.  There are numerous fund raisers you can do to raise funds, also.

  2. Adopting from the foster care system would be the least expensive route for adoption.

If you would rather go international or through a private agency, don't forget about the adoption tax credit which might help with the costs of adoption.
