Solve for “x”.

42) 1/3x = -7

Solve for “n”.

44) n/-8 = -5

45) Solve for “n”: 3(n – 1) = 2n + 8

46) Solve for “y”: 4y + 3(y + 3) = 14y + 23

  1. you must get your variable by itself, with no numerical value. so it would be like this

    1/3 divided by -7=x

    -8 times -5 =n

    3n-4=2n=8

    5n-4=8

    5n=12

    12divided5

    n=....

  2. On each of these problems, you just isolate for the unknown variable.

    42  1/3X = -7

           X = -21  (All you do is multiply each side by 3)

    44  N/-8 = -5  (Okay this one you do the same as the one above.  Multiply both sides by -8 (negative 8) to isolate for N.)

    45  3(n-1) = 2n + 8

        3n - 3 = 2n+8    (you put all your "n's" on one side)

        n = 11

    Try doing the last one for yourself.  You do it the same way.  Remember to first multiply out your 3(y + 3).  Then put all your y's on one side.
