I just picked up a Craftsman 10 HP 30" riding mower from a friend, it has been sitting for about a year and wont stay running. I also can't find a gas filter on the gas line, which might be the cause of it not running. so is there not some where online someone could help find the scimatic's on my mower? Heres the info.

Craftsman 10 HP rear engine mounted 4 cycle 30" cut Riding mower. Model # 502254190

Thanks for all you can do. please send links with your answers.

I pulled the carb off and cleaned it inside and out, the float looked great, the pin wasn't even dirty, put it all back together and still haveing a hard time with it running, if you put gas in the carb filter area it will run with that gas then stop after it is used.

  1. is the air filter clean?

did you put in a new spark plug?

what about that choke? is it closed while you're Trying to start it.

if not then it won't keep running til the engine gets warm, just like the old fashioned car carbs.

are you using new gas?  get rid of all the old gas in the tank.

i'm running out of ideas. remember to readjust the choke as soon as it starts running.  isn't there a black gasket inside the carb that acts as a fuel pump?  if that gets a small hole or cut in it it will no longer pump the fuel.  the part that acts as a pump is usually a small round circle on that black gasket. recheck that.

good luck to ya  (a craftsman owner myself)

you'd have to get inside my head to find that link.

  2. If it runs when you pour gas in the carb, the problem is the carb or its not getting gas.  If you remove the gas line from the carb and gas flows you can rule out the (if any) fuel filter.  Use caution around gasoline.  If gas set in the carb for a year it turned to varnish inside the ports and passageways inside the carb and have to be cleaned out.  I guess you drained the old gas and put in new.

  3. i would not pour gas into the carb use starting fluid also try choking it while starting you have to push the throttle all the way up to choke if you dont have a seperate choke k**b. check the for spark also

  4. If there is a filter it will be between the tank and the carb in the fuel line.  Not all had them.  It still sounds like the carb is the issue.  You should take the carb apart and soak in a good cleaner.  Blow it out and clean all the passages.  Put it back together with a rebuild kit.

The "gasket" the other post was talking about is a diapharm, you don't have that kind of carburetor.

If you have good flow at the carb through the fuel line take the carb off and clean and rebuild it properly and it will run like new.  I don't mean with spray cleaner and a rag, soak it in a quality cleaner and use a rebuild kit.

  5. have u checked craftsman.com or the sears website might have a link to it. u should be able to print an owners manual

  6. it nice that you clean the cab.  but did you clean the tank. and the shut off valve be cause if it set for a long time the valve is not opening up all the way and it cause have dirt in it and the fuel not comeing out full that were i would starte first.from the lawnman
