Retro viruses infect a host's cell and replaces a base pair with its own, an ERV is about 500 base pairs long.
If that happens in a body cell, the ERV will perish once the organism dies, but if it's injected into a s*x cell than that could mean that the offsprings will have permanent ERVs in their DNAs.
Humans and chimpanzees have the same ERV in the same location of the genome, suggesting common ancestory.
