I own these speakers but have recently moved around my room where they are and now the cables are no long enough. Does anyone know what type of extension cable i would need to connect the speakers up correctly with longer wires?? Thanks for any help.

  1. No special cables needed. You just need to splice a piece of two conductor wire on the end (or cut off the plugs if your HT setup uses them and add the wire in between the two ends.

Simply twist the wire together over a 1/2" (1 cm) or so and tape. If you have a soldering iron solder the joint, but it's not essential.

The whole point is to extend the wire and retain the right polarity (phasing). The latter means the + and - (or red and black) speaker terminals are wired to the same receiver terminals (i.e. red to red). This is facilitated by an identifier (stripe, dotted line, different colour, etc) on one of the 2 conductors of the speaker wire. If the wire you are using doesn't have an identifier just be careful to connect the wires up so you know which is which.

You won't hurt anything if you don't respect phasing, but the bass will be somewhat less if you get it wrong.

You will risk damage to your amplifier if the 2 speaker wires are allowed to connect anywhere, so be sure to tape the splices carefully to ensure proper insulation of one conductor from the other.

Finally, use extension speaker wire the same size or larger (not smaller). Home depot have wire in bulk at reasonable price, but for a small amount Radio Shack or almost any electronic store will have speaker wire.
