  1. For making a variety of items, the longer hook is better.

  2. Crochet doesn't stay on your hook the way knitting stays on a needle as you work.  Because it functions stitch by stitch, the length doesn't matter.

All in all, I recommend the Clover Soft Touch crochet hooks.  The handle is thicker and softer, which makes it really comfortable to work with for longer periods of time.

They're especially nice for smaller sized needles.

  4. the handle size doesn't matter if you aren't using and afgan hook. if you are going to make something with an afgan hook, you need to plan out how big whatever the thing you are going to make. buy an afgan hook that goes with the yarn really well.

  5. I am a big fan of the Susan Bates hooks and I work with the smaller hooks because they are more comfortable for me to hold. Also the afghans I make do not call for a long hook, my Mom has used them and hates them.

If you are getting a set get as many as you can from Susan Bates in the silvalume http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?C...

I also like the SB ones in acrylic http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?C... which I have used with the ribbon yarn.

I have tried the Boye brand and the yarn doesn't move as well on and off the hook and I find it annoying and it slows down my progress.  I have not tried the Lion Brand plastic ones nor have I tried wooden hooks.

  6. Normal crochet does not require you to hold stitches on the hook as it is worked stitch by stitch and only 1 to 5 loops is usually held on the hook depending on the stitch you are working so a short hook is better for this  - however if working afghan crochet you will need a much longer hook to hold the stitches as they ARE held on the hook/needle for this type of crochet.  It really depends on what you are going to make and how often.

If working afghan crochet try to keep to a certain thickness of yarn and that way you will only need a couple of these hooks/needles BUT by all means go out and buy the shorter hooks in ALL sizes as you will probably be working with these more often and with different thicknesses of yarn.

    Hope this helps.
