I've already asked this before, but I'm still not sure if I should try out for cross country for my incoming freshmen year!?

REASONS WHY I WANT TO:

stay fit

my past PE teacher recommended it for me

im willing to improve

NOT

my dad did it when he was a freshmen and told me that he hated it and not to do it, lol

my mile time isnt that great usually between 9-11 minutes

i'm kinda slow

haven't trained and tryouts are like in 2 days

  1. Just do it! It will be fun, and if you don't like it you can always quit with the excuse that you need to focus on school! Go ahead and just do it. They will get you in shape if your not already, and you'll probably be addicted to running by the end of the season.

  2. You should definitely try out!  Your school is lucky to have so many interested people that they need tryouts.  Our team is so small that we have to beg others to join!   Anyway, it doesn't matter if your dad didn't like it; it just wasn't his sport.  Give it a try and see if you like it.  Running is so much easier and a lot more fun when you do it with others.

  3. I didnt know there were tryouts to run XC. I ran XC my senior year and i wish i ran all four years. When i started, my mile time was like yours and by the end of the season, i got it down to low 7s, high 6 min range. You should do it. If you dont like it, then dont do it next year. you dont want to regret not doing it later.

  4. Go for it!  Highschool XC is a great opportunity to improve your running speed and skill and meet cool people.  I ran XC and track and field for all four years of highschool and throughly enjoyed it.  I remember there were runners who started out slow and improved quite a bit to be one of the top three in their squad.  It's a great sport that will help you to get in great shape and maybe make you into a lifetime runner.  GO FOR IT!!!  If you get better at it, there may be a scholorship down the road in college.

  5. cross country isnt about speed, its about endurance. they typically run like 8-12 miles a practice. i remember during football my freshman year, we had to run 2 laps around the field. i thought i had it bad until i saw them running. give it a try. if you suck, dont do it.
