I am 15 and am going into my sophomore year of HS. I want to do a sport this year and I want to know how to train for Cross country running and when the season starts. I'm a beginner so I need all the info I can get on cross country. Thanks in advance.

  1. Cross country is one of the most rewarding sports I have ever done, and I have tried them all. I am going into my junior year and I absolutely love the sport and all of the great people you meet.

Don't be intimidated whatsoever by the course length (3.1 miles), if you want something bad enough, you will be surprised how much you can achieve.

As for training, this is how our team operates:

Mondays- Hard days, push your self but be aware of your limits.

Tuesdays- Long days, reach out for that extra 5 minutes out. This is not a day to push the pace, but a day to build muscle. (There is a big difference between football and Cross Country; in football it does not matter how big you are, so you lift heavy weights in low repetition, XC is quite the opposite you lift lighter weights in higher repetitions building strength and not so much muscle.)

Wednesday- Recovery day, a medium length from Monday to Tuesday and a light pace.

Thursday- A bit harder workout, but not like Monday

Friday- Namelessfaceless day, run a bit farther than Wednesday at a pace where you can hold a good conversation.

I would talk to your school's XC coach, just say, "hi my name is alex and I am interested in running XC this year, do you think you could help me out with a training schedule over the summer months?"

No matter what, do not get discouraged. My freshman year I was new to the sport and I ran a 22 minute 5k, now after 2 and a half years of training, I run under 18 minutes, which carries over to track season with a 4:38 mile.

    Hope this helps!

Oh, and eat bananas and bagels with jelly before workout, right amounts of sugar without giving you a cramp!

  2. Well there is alot of running hence Cross Country

But... If you are a beginner and you don't want to run 3 miles everyday I would do track instead. Track is more sprints or if you are fast at the mile. Field events with throwing and stuff.

The season is different for every school so you have to check with your school.

Cross country is intense running sometimes it's 3 miles sometimes they run 3 miles in the morning and 9 miles in the afternoon. It's usually everyday to.

If you do join track or XC just make sure you don't eat salty foods because it bloats you.

  3. Here is my workout schedule for the summer....

    June- 3-5 miles a day, 3-4 days a week.

    July- 4-6 miles a day, 4-5 days a week.

    August- 5-8 miles a day, 5-6 days a week.

Summer running is to get your body in shape. I did this my first year of running and it really showed come the first practice.

    Good Luck!!! :)
