Currie Cup round-six: Recap
The sixth round of the 2010 Currie Cup proved to be another exciting engagement between the eight premiership clubs. Only one game away from the halfway point all the squads were keen to push their way up the table
Griquas 58 Pumas 25
The Griquas hosted the Pumas at home in Kimberly in the sides sixth-round match-up.
The Pumas were able to get the upper hand on the Griquas in the first half, as they controlled the ball well, and dominated possession. Watts and Venter were both able to dot down for tries, and give the visitors a narrow 17-15 lead, heading into halftime.
After the break the Griquas managed to take over the game. Captain Naas Olivier led the way for the home side, controlling play, and performing admirably at the tee.
Sarel Pretorius was the hero of the second half crossing the whitewash twice for the home side, while Cecil Kemp, Frikkie Spies and Riaan Viljoen also put tries home.
In all the Griquas managed an impressive eight tries, as they put on an offensive clinic at home to a small crowd of under 1,000.
Sharks 51 Leopards 6
The Leopards hosted the Natal Sharks in week six, at home in Potchefstroom.
The Sharks were not bothered at all by a flat Leopards side. They managed to sprint past their hosts for a seven tries on the day.
The Sharks were the stronger team all the way through, securing the bonus point before the whistle was blown for halftime with a strong push from full-back Louis Ludik.
The Leopards were simply no match, as the Sharks displayed their second place form, getting two second half tries from Stefan Treblanche, as well as a fine day from Patrick Lambie at the tee, as he knocked down three conversions and two penalties.
Golden Lions 30 Cheetahs 26
The Lions hosted the Cheetahs in Johannesburg over the weekend.
The Lions put on an impressive show at the end of the game, notching two late tries to power past the Cheetahs.
The Lions played strong rugby early and were able to take a 13-9 lead into half time. However, they allowed the visitors to climb back into the game and take the lead with sloppy play early in the second-half.
The Lions defence seemed to disintegrate early in the half, allowing Ashley Johnson and Kobus Calldo to crash over the whitewash for ties. Louis Strydom knocked down a penalty, which gave the away side the lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Lions were able to come back however, as Elton Jantjies and Jannie Bashoff muscled their way over the line to give the Lions back the lead and their second win of the season.
Western Province 15 Blue Bulls 12
In the match-up of the week Western Province welcomed the Blue Bulls to Cape Town.
The match did not see any tries, but was an impressive display of kicking ability, and was not short of intensity on both sides.
Western Province dominated the first half but was only able to come away with a 6-3 lead, as Willem de Waal notched two for the home side, and Jacques-Louis Potgieter put home a penalty for the Bulls.
De Waal was perfect on the tee and extended the Western Province lead to 15-9 in the final 10 minutes. A score line that proved too difficult for the Bulls to make up, as they were forced settle for a late penalty, and a road loss.
