Cutting Zippers?

Question

Ok, so I need to make some small pouches with zippers. The biggest zipper I would be needing is 4-5" long and most of the zippers I have found are 9" long or longer. So I was wondering...can I cut the zippers in half so they will fit my needs? Will it mess the zipper up? Please help I need to know a.s.a.p! Thanks!

it well mess up the zipper sense you need  the bottom and top half to use it look around some of your craft shops that deal in to  sewing you  can find smaller ones if not why not used snaps or buttons

It depends if it is a plastic or metal zipper. I don't know how you would deal with one with metal teeth, but I have cut plasic ones many times with great results. Here's what you do: Leave the zipper done up! Get a needle and thread. Measure how long you want the zipper to be, and tightly stitch several times through the zipper tape and around the plastic teeth at the point where you want it to end. This will hold the zipper together and prevent the carriage from sliding off. Then, with a sharp pair of scissors, cut the zipper 2cm past your stitching so it doesn't unravel!  GOOD LUCK

I have cut down a zipper before and you need to do a zig-zag stitch on "0" so it will stay in one place and not move. That will prevent the metal part of the zipper from comming off.  I hope this helps ;)))
