Question:

DNA in bananas and pineapples?

I know there are DNA in them, we even did that experiment where we had to extract the DNA from them. But then how do I test the hypothesis that what we extracted was really DNA? We blended the bananas with pineapples and orange juice and honey and we were supposed to find out which of them has DNA, and how to test that it is really DNA, that it is really DNA from the fruits...

  1. If you don't have Southern Blot Technology, you can always prove that something is DNA by combining it with enzymes - protease, lipase, etc. When you exclude all organic materials except nucleic acids, that's it.

You should add all organic-molecule-cutting enzymes but not nuclease. Once you do that you'll see that the substance your experimenting with is not protein nor sugar nor fat and only thing it could be is nucleic acid.

Interesting question is how to prove its plant DNA. You really need to "read" DNA bases in order to do that...

  2. Southern blot, check the sample vs known fragments from bananas and pineapples.
