Question:

DV video camera and windows vista?

I am the owner of a Panasonic NV-GS17 DV camcorder and New Owner of Windows Vista (don't start vista bashing I know). I plugged the camcorder into the USB port and it started the install progress like it should and it did it's thing, no problems.

But the computer does not acknowledge the camera being connected.

it doesn't tell me there is a fault or anything, it is just as if the camera isn't connected.

Can anybody help?

  1. Add a firewire port to your computer and get that working. Then, using a firewire cable connected to the DV port of the camcorder (not USB), you will connect to the firewire port you just installed and import the video.

USB is used only for transferring stills from the memory card or maybe using the camcorder as a web-cam.

To get the video off the miniDV tape, you need to use firewire (IEEE1394a, i.Link... all the same thing).

  2. Vista is the most flawed thing since ME2000. i advise you talk to a professional, because so many problems can sprout from one. I have the same problem with my old Ipod... it just doesnt connect or either itll say malfunction.

  3. probaly its not inserted probaly or ur computer has a diffrernt software

  4. DV transfer via USB is still in its infancy. Most computers use firewire (FW, FW400 or FW800 (this is the latest standard and has a different connector but is backwards compatible with the correct adaptor) or IEEE1394 or iLink)

Check wiki using Firewire for other symbols to identify it.

    According to this page...

    http://uk.shoppydoo.com/price-digital_ca...

    Your connections are:

PC Connection Firewire (i.Link IEEE 1394), USB

    Analog Input yes

    Analog Output yes

    DV-in no

I suspect the USB connection is only for the Webcam mode.

Any good computer parts store can supply a FW card that is either PCI (to go in a desktop computer) or PC card to go in a Laptop.

www.maplin.co.uk do both types of FW card.

  5. I have no problems with any of my 3 video cameras using USB so I don't know what the people that say you have to use firewire are talking about. Just make sure that your cam is switched to playback when you plug it in using a mini usb lead & you should be able to import your video. If you need any more help then just message me.
