Question:

DVD Burning ... questions?

Im used to simply taking my clips and burning them onto a CDR as data and then playing them on my DVD player. I just bought a DVD burner, but I am having trouble. It doesnt seem to be as simple as the old CDR method, and I am cant get the test DVDs that I burn to play. Here is some information about what I am asking:

1) The clips I am trying to burn are from the internet, most are smaller 30 sec to 4 min.

2) Most of the clips are .mpeg, a few are .avi. However the .avi were converted from youtube so I believe they are audio video .avi, NOT divx or xvid .avi (if that makes sense)

Ive been reading about converters, and converting to .vob files, but Im slightly lost. Maybe what Im trying to do cant be done, I dont know. Thanks in advance for ANY information or tips.

  2. First of all, AVI is a container format that stands for Audio/Video Interface (at least I think), so the part about the audio video avi and not divx or xvid, no, it doesn't make sense. all avis are audio video..it just depens on the codec.

If you want to make a DVD of your clips, the first thing you need to do is get them into MPEG2 format...so you'll have to convert your non mpeg2 mpegs and convert your avi to mpeg2 format. Then once you have your mpeg2 files made, you need to get a dvd authoring program that will let you put everything together...you can create menus if you want or, just have each video be a "chapter" and let 'em play. The DVD-Authoring program will make the VOB's and all associated files needed for playback in a DVD player. You then burn the files it's created into a VIDEO_TS folder on the root of your DVD using your favorite burning program (burning as UDF and not ISO) and, that's it.

Ok, it's slightly more complicated than that, the folks over at www.videohelp.com will have PLENTY of info, you'll probably even find a guide that'll tell you how to do what you're wanting to do. It's been my first stop whenever i've had a video question of any sort for YEARS.
