DVD Player Disc Read Error

Question

Getting a disc read error on 3 separate clean discs, all of which have played fine previously, the "helpful hints" in the manual are as usual not at all helpful as long as you're not a moron who knows how to put in a DVD right side up. So far today, every disc we have tried gives a disc read error.
