Question:

Daddy long-leg problem?

Please don't tell me NOT to kill them. Our yard is infested with Daddy long-legs. We're talking 10 in a 2x2 square. I have a huge fear of spiders and I want to be able to take my 1 year old in the yard without freaking out. Is there a natural remedy for lowering their numbers?

  1. Kill their food source (smaller insects) and they will go elsewhere.  Try Bayer Complete Insect Killer, a granule applied to the lawn every 3 months.

Or if you're trying to go all-natural, try Greenlight's Yardsafe Insect Repellant Granules, which uses cedar oil to repel, instead of kill, insects.

  2. You should be thankful the daddy long legs are there.  You must have a number of insects in your garden.  They are feeding of those insects which could be harmful to your vegetable plants.  Once their food supply runs out, they will move on.  Nothing to fear from daddy long leg spiders...........

  3. Give it a couple of days.  The daddy long-legs will naturally move on to more acceptable feeding grounds for themselves.  Birds will eat them up if they don't move on quick enough.  You also might want to see what has brought the spiders to your lawn.  They do eat other insects (ants, earwigs, etc), so see what else is in the lawn....if you can do it without getting too freaked out!.
