Danny Green retains IBO belt
Australian boxing champion Danny Green successfully retained his IBO cruiserweight title by beating opponent BJ Flores on points Wednesday 17 November.
Green improved his record to 31 wins, with 27 coming by knockout, and three defeats.
Green admitted that due to the superior height and reach of Flores, it was difficult to execute his game plan. During the fight, he was often forced to try to engage Flores at a distance, with mixed results.
“It was very hard to implement my game plan tonight against Flores,” Green revealed. “I had to out-box the boxer and I didn’t the chance to put him away.”
Official scoring of the bout was 117-112, 118-110, and 118-111 all in favour of Green.
Flores, previous undefeated in 24 contests, was forced to face his first professional defeat. Despite accepting the verdict, he felt the decision was somewhat partial.
“It was a fantastic close fight and Danny boxed very smartly,” Flores, 31, said. "I don't agree with the unanimous points decision and I am very discouraged, but I fought a great champion over 12 rounds."
In his last bout, it took Green just 29 seconds to knock out Paul Briggs in a bout that made more headlines for its controversy than its quality. Briggs was unable to rise from an innocuous jab that grazed his head, one of the first punches of the fight,
spawning conclusions that he had thrown the fight.
To add to the controversy, various online betting operations experienced massive plunges in bets hours before the fight, suggesting a prearranged conclusion to the fight had leaked among the betting world.
Green is most known for his first round technical knockout of legendary Roy Jones Jr. in December of 2009.
While many were willing to congratulate Green on a spectacular performance, more were willing to write Jones off as an over-the- hill fighter that would have easily outclassed Green in his glory days.
