I have these two computer but I am too lazy to install teh router to transfer this really huge file. (like 7 gigs) would it be possible to just connect an ethernet port directly between the computers and transfer like that?

  1. That will not work using a straight thru cable, What you need is a Cross-over cable, or a serial cable.

  2. Yes, but it wont be easier :-)

    Assuming both computers have an ethernet (network) card, you need to buy or make a "crossover cable"

  3. ya but it would be more work setting up the comp to comp network than plugging in a router, the router automatically does all the well...as the name implies; routing for u. i dunno maybe if u jus plug them in ur os will realize its connected to another comp rather than a router and config itself but i kinda doubt it. it would prolly be faster to go firewire if both machines have it, if there macs or if the one with the file is a mac restart  holding t to start in target firewire mode.

  4. ethernet cables ( some of ) are X-over cables !!! @ ximeno

    is it any harder to just plug in the router

    ...........whilst connecting the cables ffs !!!?????

    maybe...copy 7gigs of data to a dvd and then u can transfer it to many

    amounts of pc's ~~~ yo !!!

    :)

  5. yes you can, just put the cables on both ports. then, specify IP address for both pc.

    sample:

    for pc1

    ipaddress: 192.168.1.2

    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    gateway: 192.168.1.1

    <leave the dns>

    for pc2

    ipaddress: 192.168.1.3

    netmask: 255.255.255.0

    gateway: 192.168.1.1

    <leave the dns>

    you can find the settings for ip in the TCP/IP config of your network adpater.
