Dead CReek! NEED HELP!!?

Yesterday while walking by the creek close to my house, i saw that all of the crayfish and earthworms were dead. I counted at least 28 just right there, and the earth worms are all white and littler the substrate. I know crayfish indicate the health of a creek and can be used for biomonitoring. There is a swim club about 30 yards up, and they were fixing the pool or something, so possibly their chlorine water leaked into to the creek? I need help on what to do, i'll take some pics and collect some water samples, as well as contact the State Representative and/or the local EPA. Any suggestions on what else i could do/ ask for?

  1. Report it to your local DNR.

Another fine product that is decimating our frog population is the common weed killer called roundup.

  2. Confront the pool owners, if any pool chemicals got in the creek in high concentrations, i don't know what you could do but wait for nature to dilute the creek.

Talk to the people who run the pool, make sure they know that they've damaging the creek and see if there is a way they can make sure it doesn't happen again.

  3. Call the EPA or your state environmental protection dept.  It's in the front (blue pages) of your local phone book.  I wouldn't confront anyone, let the officals handle that.

  4. It is probably worse than chlorine. Freeze a few of the dead critters and call the DEP or the equivalent in your state. Have you checked the phone book? There may be a number to call when you see a spill. The faster you act, the better.
