Deer Hunting Rifle?

Question

I am looking to buy a 30-06 for deer hunting and was wondering if some are better than others or if it is just personal preference. My dad has a Springfield 30-06, one of them WWII sniper rifles and I really like it, but I doubt that I will find one of those. So any suggestions on a newer model would be helpful, thanks.

If a gun shoots straight it really dosent matter what model it is as long as it safe and reliable as for a 30-06 its a good choice I have taken animals from the size of a deer to a 2500lb african eland

The 03 Springfield is indeed a fine rifle. There's an old saying from the first world war about the Germans having the best hunting rifle, the Americans having the best target rifle, and the British having the best battle rifle, and there's more than a little truth in the aphorism. The Springfield you could find, though there's a premium on them these days, but it's a little heavy and unwieldy to be considered great for hunting. You'll want to think about what kind of hunting you do. For instance, one of my children does most of his hunting in thick woods, so I got him a little Remington model 7 (in 7mm08) because it's light and handy. Another hunts primarily from a stand, so a standard rifle was best for him, and if that's the case with you, then it is indeed largely a matter of personal preference---and budget!

I note you already have quite a few votes for the Remmy 700, and while I own more of those than any other, I wouldn't make a blanket recommendation. Try them all, and look at the features and styling.

A:  It used to be so simple, you could chose the Remington 700 ADL or BDL in your choice of caliber.  So now you have a choice of half-a-dozen or so models and even more calibers.  How about a: Model 700™ BDL™ in the tack-driving .260 Remington caliber?  Or a 700 CDL Stainless Fluted Limited Edition rifle?  Or a Remington 700 CDL "Boone &  Crockett" Series in your choice of calibers from .243 Winchester to .300 WSM including .30-06 Springfield?  Next question:

Did they fix the problems with those with the gun firing when the safety is switched off?  

A:  Guns are supposed to fire when the safety is switched off!  Seriously, the only problem I know of with the old 700s was that the safety could accidently be brushed-off by a branch when you climbed onto a tree blind (or the like) and fire if the trigger snagged on something.  Extra caution is the rule here.  Don't chamber a round until you're already in your blind.
