Default on monitor

Question

i recently done a complete wipe of my hard drive.i then loaded a new copy of the full version of win. xp.for some reason windows put my plug and play hp mx70 monitor into default.i can't set my screen resolution or color bits.so everything is very large on my screen.do you have any idea how to get my pc to recognize the plug and play monitor and get it out of default????
