Question:

Del Mar Horseracing picks?

I will be going to Del Mar racetrack on Saturday and know very little about horseracing. I would like to make some "reasonable" bets so that I appear to be a little less green. Can somebody please suggest some wagers for me (I just don't want to embarrass myself!) Thanks so much!

  1. stick with the $2 dollars bets to win, the program they giv u at the gate will show the favorites at the bottom of the page in each race

if u want to pick 2 horse, go for the $2 Exacta Box that would be four dollars at the window

Exacta Box means that the both horse will come in first and second

    goodluck

  2. Tell them what race you want to bet, how much you want to bet, what type of bet you want to make, and the number(s) of the horses you want to bet on in that order.  For example, say "In the 9th race at Del Mar, I want to bet $2 across the board on the 9." (I happen to like that horse in that race, as it happens).

Across the board means you are betting the horse to win, place and show, so that if he/she comes in first, second or third you will have at least one winning ticket.  I think that's a good strategy for a new fan, that way you have a chance to make some good money if your horse wins and can still enjoy the thrill of cashing in a ticket for lesser money if your horse runs well but is edged out by one or two opponents.  If you like two horses, you can play a quinella.  For example, you might say "In the 2nd race at Del Mar, I want a $2 quinella, 1 with 5." (another bet I like).  With the quinella, you are picking the top two horses to finish in either order.  Beyond that, I'd wait till you've seen a few more live races before trying to play any more complicated bets.

  4. First and foremost, HAVE A GOOD TIME. Here's the Del Mar site. You might want to click on Handicapping and see who the experts are picking for Saturday. I would suggest you play some exacta boxes, picking 2 horses as the top 2 finishers. $2 for a $1 box or $4 for a $2 box.

    HAVE FUN

  5. I recommend the 'del mar margarita' shaken not blended, served in the shaker (any grandstand bar serving mixed drinks), the rubio's fish taco stand in the south grandstand second floor, hanging out in the whittingham room (the closest bar next to the jocks room just next to the paddock) and to check out the late friday night racing...there will be bands playing, check in the Union (san diego daily paper) or the online sight for who is playing, also in the back of the Union there are pretty good free handicap picks with the areas top handicappers and their record going into each racing day (wins, places, shows and recommended trifecta and daily triple plays)... remember to always ask for track and race number first (as there are a half dozen tracks running that you can bet on) for instance 'Del Mar , 3rd race, 2 dollars to win and place on horse number 3...' in the program itself there will be a spot that actually describes the bets and what some of them cost, such as an exacta box or partial wheel...remember one thing...to have fun...I lived and worked in San Diego for 20 years and  there is no better track to go hang out and party at...opening day and the late friday parties with live bands is the best happening you can be a part of at a racetrack, dress is casual and comfortable for the most part although you will see people associated with the racing in suits and dresses, but also lots of people in sundresses, bikini tops, shorts , straw hats and whatever else you might see at a beach...because, well...its del mar...where the surf meets the turf...

  6. you best choice is to look for horse that are 5-1 odds and lower anf play the horse to show,,which is 3rd place,,you will not make alot of money, but it will be fun to make a few bucks,,that is what i do,,as to win it is hard to pick a winner,,,,another thing to watch for to watch the horse as they parade in front to see which one relieves him or her self play that horse also,as they are not bound up to run,,it might not work all the time but at least 70 percent win or are in the money,,good luck
