Question:

Dell 1501 adapter hum?

I bought a dell inspiron a little over a year ago. Today I noticed the adapter was humming. Is it supposed to hum? And if it's not, will it harm my computer and how long might it be before the laptop/adapter dies?

I've never noticed it before. The adapter does get pretty warm; is the issue temperature related?

What's going on? What should I do?

  1. The hum is normal; put your ear close to any transformer and you will hear it. If it's starting to get louder it's usually a sign it's put under a bigger stress - maybe your laptop battery is getting old.

No, that's also normal. Actually the cheap ones can get so hot it will burn you - some have even went up in smoke.

Nothing. If the problem gets really worse replace the charger (it's cheaper); if the problem persist, the battery has aged, replace it.
