Question:

Demiliterized Zone?

My laptop is running behind a router along with 3 other laptops in this household so we have all been assigned a dynamic ip address. How do I set up this computer to use the static ip address without a hub? The reason I want to do this is because with a dynamic ip address I can't seem to figure out how to connect to my ftp server from outside this network and also when i create game servers like on "halo". Nobody is able to connect to it because it's using my dynamic ip. My router is a linksys WRT150N. And I heard about DMZ and i'm not sure if that is the solution.

  1. DSL? It is truely dynamic IP while cable is rather static DHCP deal. This is under ISP control and you have to pay extra for truely static stuff.

Besides that, most router is doing full network address translation and can allow internal static setup in addition to punching ports/forward data; but full DMZ is not exactly recommended; at least for running full time.

  2. It is the external IP address that is used to connect tpo your network. You should set port forwarding for the required ports pointing to an internal IP address. You would have to set your machine's Ip address about 4 or 4 higher than the dhcp pool of addresseslisted in the router configuration, and ensure you do NOT use the same IP as the router to avoid conflicts on the network. You would also need to subscribe to a static address on the public side for any guarantee of success. This cost extra with your ISP, and they may also want you to subscribe to a business broadband service as well. Do NOT use the demilitarised zone as this leaves whichever machine it points to wide open to attack from the internet. You will need to set the exception for the same ports in your firewall on the pc.
