I agree with Greg, they are both excellent machines. I suggest you find a dealer and go play with them, especially the remote controls to see which one suits YOU best. Power and features are similar as are the prices. I would  suggest you also look into

Pioneer Elite vsx-91txh or VSX-92txh.

It may be a hassle, but you will live with your choice for a few years!

I prefer the sound of the Denon (and I think the controls are a bit more intuitive) but really they're both very good receivers. Either way, you won't be going wrong.

What is more important to you. Audio quality  or Video features. If Audio quality comes first then pick the one that sounds best to your ears. There is no other way. If they "sound" similar, then choose the one that has the features you require.If video features is what you are after then choose the one that has everything you need.Don't forget that a Receiver is compromised by the use of a single power supply for all three sections (the Pre-Amp stage, the Power Amplifiers stage, and the Tuner stage). The needs of the Power Amplifiers stage affects  the Pre-Amp stage which results in a degradation of sound quality.The Pre-Amp is the heart of the system.

Depends on the features you are looking at. These two brands are the biggest competitors but at the moment Yamaha has newer releases so more current features for your buck. The latest Yamaha RXV-663 has Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD master audio formats at $549 but you have to go to $1199 from Denon to get those in the AVR2808Ci. The Yamaha to beat is the RXV-883 (The RXV-881 is the old model) which then include HDMI upconversion and scaling at $999. The Yamaha has 3 HDMI inputs, with Denon you need to pay $1599 for the AVR3808Ci to get more than 2. If you ask again in 4 months the answer will be different probably as they always go back and forth.

From a brand standpoint you really are looking at the 2 powerhouse audio companies. Denon is Japans oldest audio company originating in 1910, wrote the code for CDs and pressed the first CDs themselves. Yamaha is all about music. Yamaha makes everything from instruments, Amps, Speakers, Distributed audio, to even having a school of music in japan. Tremendous backgrounds for both companies.

Checkout Onkyo they have the best receivers for the $.  More features for less $.  If you are set on a yamaha or denon i would go with the yamaha.
