  1. First, its Dental Hygienist, not Hygentist.

In most states, you need an Associates or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with an accredited Dental Hygiene program.  You will need to take a variety of courses, including the basic prereqs (algebra, statistics, english, psych)  as well as prerequisite science courses, including Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology.

Most Hygiene programs are very competative.  I was one of only 40 students accepted to my program last year.  My school requires excellent grades (Anything below a B is unnacceptable to them) to be admitted, and once admitted, you are required to keep above a 73 average in ALL classes to stay in the program.

Good Luck.  I have 9 months left before I graduate and start my career as a Dental Hygienist, and I LOVE it.  It is a fantastic field to be in.

  2. I have a bachelors degree from The Ohio State University. There are 2 year colleges. They all are very competitive. Finding a job right now is difficult. Good luck in what you decide. It is a fun profession.
