  1. Im a transplant from there and I can tell you that Detroit has seen it's better days. The burbs would be better. They're trying to rebuild Detroit so, I'd take a road trip there and check the city and surrounding areas out first before making such a major life change. I'd go on-line and go to the Detroit, Michigan web site and go to different links to see what's available. Housing market as well as the Job market suck big time there. The standing joke is- There's winter season and construction season. Detroit offers a lot of great things and if you go across the mile wide Detroit River you'll be in Windsor Ontario, Canada. by Ambassador Bridge or the Detroit/Windsor Tunnel. Not sure if you need a passport to get over there as they have mentioned would come to be or just having your birth certificate and driver license will do. Anyway, as far as the weather definitely no hurricanes, tornadoes unlikely but, there could be that freak possibility. All four seasons to enjoy. Sports are great there, especially the Red Wings, Pistons. Tigers have their Comerica Park Stadium as well as Lions have a fairly new Ford Field there as well. Greektown, is where the casinos are but, beware a lot of homeless people bugging you for money down there as well. I ran into that going back there recently. Some you can't tell are really in need of help or are really bumbs. I'd suggest not giving them any money as before you know it everyone of them come out of the woodwork in search of a handout. Some are crazy I got into an argument with one that was disrespectful to me it's my nature to not take c**p off anyone even if they're not right in the head. LOL I pray every night for God to help those less fortunate than myself. It can be pretty scary out there for a young person this world isn't as kind as it once was especially on unfamiliar turf. If you act like you belong and don't look like a tourist looking all over the place like you're lost most of the time people don't bug you. Hold your own ground and keep your head up. congrats on getting into college and best wishes to you whatever you decide. It really is a great city if you give it a chance. I'd feel better if you checked out surrounding areas and just drove down there with friends for a night on the town or day on the town. Lots of great museums to see. Belle Island is nice to cruise on. Take care.

  2. If you can get in?  Then there is no question what school to go to which would be the best - University of Michigan-AnnArbor.

Near Downtown Detroit is Wayne State Unversity; West Detroit suburbs University of Detroit-Mercy; University of Michigan-Dearborn just west of Detroit city limits; Madonna Unversity-Livonia, MI (20 minutes from Downtown)

Thinking out of the box....look at Grand Valley State University on the westside of the State which is really a beautiful campus located mid way between Lake Michigan and Grand Rapids, MI ....check it out at GVSU.com, plus at GVSU there's a Downtown Grand Rapids (Pew) Campus.

  3. well, Detroit isn't the safest place...but i love it there.

  4. Wayne State University. It's a relatively safe college and they have security, and also a high African American attending. We don't have hurricanes, tornandoes almost never! Snow yes , but you're from New York and it snows there. Nowhere on this earth is really "safe". I hope you enjoy your college years here!

  5. Well if you want a college with most african americans, then I would suggest Eastern Michigan University.  It's about 30 minutes west of Detroit.  Safety is questionable there too, but Detroit and the suburbs have always been questionable.  And Dearborn (right next to Detorit) is about 80% Arab population, and the safety there is questionable too. But if you are from New York, this shouldn't be any different than what you are used to.

  6. I would look into Wayne State University and University of Detroit for your needs.  If you have really good grades, University of Michigan is the top school in the state.  A lot of east coast people go to U of M.

Detroit is unsafe in some neighborhoods, but it all depends on where you stay and what kind of activity you are into.  Most people can tell if the area they are driving through is safe or unsafe.  As for weather, Michigan has some of the best weather in the country.  The winter can get long and cold, but the summer's are excellent and the fall is very enjoyable.  No hurricanes like Florida, no earthquakes like California.  Occassionally there are tornadoes, but you will not find those in the city.

Detroit does have a rough image, but I would think you can see through that and decide for yourself what is best for you.

  7. Detroit is like any big city so don't listen get discouraged by rude comments on here about how unsafe it is.  No place is safe.

If you want to be in Detroit City with the majority being african american then  Wayne State University is where you want to go but if you want to be alittle out of the city then the University of Michigan is a good school for you.

Typically Detroit gets the same type of weather as New York.

    Good luck with your decision.

  8. Haven't you heard the statistics? Aside from Iraq, Detroit is the most unsafe place on Earth to live. Plus, if you want to go to a college where the majority of the population is african-american, and if you're truly fascinated about the weather, go to University of Michigan. It's a highly respected school, and they know there stuff.

    2. College for Creative Studies

    3. Marygrove College

As for Detroit being safe, Detroit is not consid

    4. University of Detroit Mercy

    Before you decide if you want to go to school in Michigan or any college in the United States, please keep in mind the following;

    1. If you go to college outside the State of New York, you will have to pay the out of state fee and for a institution in Michigan, you will pay up to four times than the in state fee.

    2. Attending a College is like buying a house. They might look good on paper but the institution might look different in person.

    3. If you are going to a college without a car, find a school that will provide you with access to the outside world. This mean make sure the school has public transportation oppotunities so you can see the world around you.
