  1. The main objective of weaning is to enable a cow to calve every year by allowing her to regain condition after weaning.

Calves are ideally weaned when they are 7 to 8 months old.

The right time to wean a calf depends on the condition of the cow and not the age of the calf.

During years of drought and poor feed supply, calves should be weaned early (about 6 months), to allow the cow to recover before the onset of winter.

  2. 7 months is ideal, BUT most people usually have to pull the calves off at 5-6 months old. It will depend on the momma cows body condition.... if she is poor, pull the calf off 5-6 mts old and start the calves on feed. After a month or so, they will all start looking better.

We don't raise Dexters, we raise Charolais and Angus X's, & some w/ just about everything in them!

  3. between 5- 6 months!!!

  4. Since Dexter cows are more mature than other breeds at the same age, 6 months would be the most convenient period for nursing.
