Okay I dont know about cars, but one month ago I took my car to get a rebuilt engine installed.Prior to these when my car was working I had a radiator installed and my car work fine without any leaks. Now that I got my car back from the engine installed my car is overheating and loosing the anti free and water. Also the engine light came on.Took it back to the shop and gave me a Diagnostic Trouble Code PO41.He said it could be a bad sensor or my Catalytic converter or exhaust. One month ago I did a smog on my car and pass. Also the car work fine until one month I received my car.Now they want to charge me $50.00 dollars to do another full Diagnostic to see what is wrong with the car.I dont know what to do. I think the mechanic just wants to take more money from me since I am a woman.

When replacing an engine do they have to remove my radiator?

Also they replace my water pump.

Could it be their fault for not installing my engine correct after one month?

  1. tell the dummies they swapped the o2 sensors around. i wouldnt pay them anything. hopefully you got the work done at a shop that has shops nationwide and not some shade tree shop. i wouldnt pay them a dime to diagnose it again. if you have a brand new engine like you claim, there should be no problems. now if you got a used engine, then that could complicate things but since its new, you have a good case and they should fix it for free

  2. P041 is the Oxygen sensor.  I had my car engine rebuilt and they simply forgot to hook one of them up.  As for the overheating, yes they have to pull the radiator.  They need to fix it, free.  They just put the motor in so it is under warranty.  Tell them to fix it or you will see them in court.

  3. Code P041 - Downstream Oxygen Sensors Swapped From Bank To Bank

Yup, they mixed up the rear oxygen sensors.  Their fault.

But oxygen sensors don't cause overheating.

I am guessing that the rebuilt engine came with or had a new thermostat and water pump installed.  This counts as part of the motor you had replaced.  Would have failed immediately if not properly installed and should also be under warranty if they failed.  They are supposed to be new.

Let's have a look at your electric fan next to the radiator........does it ever turn on?  Start it up and find out...watch the guage reading.   The latest it should turn on is 3/4 reading on the guage (if equipped).  Just make sure the cooling system is full before proceeding.  If the fan does come on, then the problem is most likely their fault.  You never replaced anything related to the cooling fan.

If the a/c system is working, turning it on should automatically turn the cooling fan on.  A bad fuse, relay or fan motor can cause overheating if everything else is ok.

Finding out which one is a job for a pro, but shouldn't be that hard.
