  1. No.  It was mentioned allegorically by Plato.  No such civilization ever found.  There have been some candidates for volcanic explosions, etc. that could have lead to folklore Plato used, but that is the extent of it, outside of the very far out fringe.

  2. As stated earlier, Plato wrote about it allegorically (most likely) in Timaeus and the Critias.  Apparently, according to Plato, Atlantis was an enormous island located in the Atlantic Ocean.  Since this is nearly the only reference that cannot yet be considered complete bunk as most later references become more and more abstract, it is extremely difficult to confirm with any authenticity that such a place could actually exist, especially considering the fact that Atlantis is supposedly an "Enormous" island in the Atlantic Ocean.  And that aside from Plato's references, there seems to be little else that could legitimitally identify Atlantis, let alone make reference to it from Plato's era.  I don't believe it existed.

  3. The same thing will be said about America in about 5000 years.

  4. Yeah, but it got eaten by the Bermuda Triangle.

  5. Many Scientists/Anthropoligsts now believe that what is now the island of Santorini is what Plato refered to as Atlantis.

It is the only island that fits the description of what Plato said that Atlantis looked like.  Also, the Minoans, the people that lived in antient Santorini were very advanced, and were very powerful.  According to Egyptian texts they control all of the balkan states.

Santorini was destroyed by a volcanic eruption that destroyed the island in its center and left the island that surrounds it covered in ash.

The effects of the explotion were seen and felt as far away as Egypt and Crete.

  6. What do you think that cruise ship that sank ran into?  the Island of Santorini used to be atlantis until the volcano did a Mt. St. Helens and blew up 90% of the island.

  7. Yes

  8. Many myths have some basis in truth. As a previous respondent has stated, the island of Santorini was destroyed by a volcano. As the image below clearly shows what was left. Archaeologists believe that there was an advanced culture on the island - along the lines of the Minoan Civilisation on Crete. After they were destroyed, stories grew about how advanced they were, when in fact they were just the same as other civilisations at the time. If an advanced civilisation existed, they certainly didn't have the intelligence or the ability to get of a small island when the volcano blew up.
