Yes.  It hit an iceberg in the Atlantic.  April of 1912.  It was the maiden voyage, and supposed to be unsinkable.  Because it was supposed to be unsinkable, there were not enough lifeboats aboard, and there were thousands of deaths.

It really happened and it was almost as dramatic as the movie made it look.  Lots of heroic actions and lots of tragedy.  A boat ran into an iceberg and sank.  That's happened to lots of boats thruout history.

Never happened. The White Star Line had spent so much money on the ship that they faced a cash flow crisis. So they loaded a bunch of folks on board, took them out to the North Atlantic, and arranged for an iceberg to be in the way. They thus fooled the insurance company into paying them lots of money.

Wait a minute I couldn't hear you with the band playing. Yes it did happen, yes the band played while they were sinking. hundreds were lost to the the fact that many life boats left without being full, and then again there weren't enough of them.
