A tram works like a train but is smaller and lighter. Many of them run in the streets in large towns and the rails are grooved and set into the road surface. Trams are very much used in Europe and are making a comeback in the UK, having been almost extinct for many years.

Trams are not a term used in the States very much, it is similar to what we call "light rail"

Primarily used for transporting people and not for heavy overland freight traffic.

Both systems developed from the horse drawn carrage, but the Tram system was delveloped to run along roads which had already been built for years and manly developed in urban areas where it ran along farly short routes this system had to be lightweight otherwise the roads would collaps & also because horses would not be able to pull the carrages which later eveloved into either buses or trams .

The other system was set up from scratch and it main power source in the early days was steam engines. These being heavy in their own right could not run on rails set into roads as the rails were prone to breaking (it was tried and there was afew accidents that killed people) so special track beds were laid and the rails were made from more heavey weight iron. The routes were also built for longer distances so cutting a 2 day jurney from say Canterbury to a 1 day jurney.

Trains run on lines that are seperated from other traffic, Trams run on lines that are part of the road and they share the space with road traffic.
