Dining Out - Hostesses?

Canadians!

Has anyone noticed lately the number of "bodies" restaurants have hanging around? One to open the door to greet you, one to take down your name, a couple others just standing around and one to take you to your table? What's up with this? Why not put them to work as servers or drop them so they can increase the wages of the servers?

I was a hostess thank you very much...and I was the only one running the entire restaurant.

Some people are food runners. and a greeting when you walk into a retsuarant is very appealing to their customers i think.

Because they are prestige resturants and they try t make you feel comfortable by opening the door for you and many customers like their services while others may be annoyed by them according to the different human natures

i think it's nice, although i can't stand someone looking at me when i'm eating so...you know...

why drop them they have to work too, like to feed their babies and buy them candy bars and presents for xmas and stuff

My local Outback usually has 3 girls, even early (5pm).  But, hey, if they have the money to spend, I enjoy it as a customer.

The amount of money they would save would probably be miniscule - especially since, I'm guessing, wouldn't put it all toward servers, when you also have bussers, cooks, etc.
