Disappointing Olympics for the USA?

Since the dissolve of the Soviet Union the US has dominated Olympics. Often competing in the 'per capita' medal count as well. But this Olympics has not gone to plan. Apart from the stand out swimmer Phelps, there plans for gold have not gone to plan. Some would say "hey we have the most medals overall". But we all know that isn't what it is all about. China is beating us. And per capita, Aussie NZL and Jamaica are beating us. What the h**l happened? We've never been a nation dominant in world team sports, But we ALWAYS dominate the olympics. Or at least for the last 20 years

Based on per capita and population, I think Jamaica is right up there with small countries like Georgia and Slovania.  I find it hard to believe that the US would ever be up there as medal per capita, considering how rich we are.
