Question:

Discus Diet Suggestions please

I have my discus, and currently I'm feeding them:

Blood worms

Brine Shrimp

Flakes...

I'd like some more suggestions, commercial suggestions preferably...

Money is no object to me so suggest a lot of food, chances are I'll get it all.

P.S. Don't even bother writing an answer if it's: "Do some more research" I have done a lot but I want MORE SUGGESTIONS.

  1. Really, most of the commercial Discus foods are no different than other foods, or are almost entirely water.  I am currently using a mixture of beef heart (VERY low in fat) and prawns, which the fish take readily, and has produced great color development (could very well be genetic, though).  My recipe is equal parts beef heart (you can find it at a deli) and prawn (from a grocery store) ground in a food processor until it looks and feels like meat loaf.  There should still be some extra water, which you can absorb by adding Spirulina powder, flakes, or even just regular fish flakes.  Continue to mix it, preferably using a pulse setting, until it feels fairly solid.  Flatten it into patties and freeze them in air tight bags.  Even after thawing and sitting in the tank, the mixture should retain a fairly gelatin-like consistency, rather than completely dissolving in the water.

  2. Why not try a variety (flake food, tubiflex worms, floating pellets, ect.) and see which ones the discus like the best. Ask and see what types of food your pet shop has and buy a little bit of each.

  3. If your looking for commercially prepared fish food, i suggest trying out Tetrabits, i have great results from using them.
