Question:

Distributor wires to external coil ?

by  |  earlier

I am trying to start my chevy 350 engine I have in a 1934 chevy. I installed a new distributor that required an external coil. The distributor has a positive and a negative wire coming off of it. Do both wires connect to the coil or just the negative? I also have a starter button I need to hook up. Where would that go? If the positive wire from the battery goes to the starter. And a positive wire from the starter goes to the positive on the coil where does the starter button hook in? If this is not making sense please ask the questions so I might be able to clarify what I am trying to say.

Thank you,

DS

  1. I don't ever recall seeing two wires coming off a distributor, but it's been a long time.

As stated above, the points in the distributor just supply the ground the negative side of the coil. Maybe the other wire is for hooking up to a tach.

You really should install a ballast resistor as well. With this resistor installed, 12 volts is supplied to the coil for starting, then is reduced to about 9 volts while running. This extends the life of the coil.

  2. Need to go to the public library and get the Basic automotive repair manuel, like the ones we had in auto shop in High school.

I still have mine and use it ever so often when I have Questions, and have in the field  for many years.

  4. the positive to the coil normally would come from the ignition with the key on the negative to the distributor the positive to the starter from the battery is direct and the starer big terminal solinoid  the small terminal is wired from the ignition switch when the key is on you pash the start button voltage flows from the ignition switchto the starer soilnoid then battery voltage makes the starter work the coil has 12volts and the ground side is being triggered to create spark if you have compression then all you need is fuel
