After reading the story on the news about two drunk passengers who tried to open an aircraft door at 33,000ft, this has made me a little jittery about flying as Im going on holiday soon.

Im sure my Mum mentioned once that cabin crew have handcuffs for any passengers who get out of line. Is this true?

  1. Yes all flight attendants are trained to deal with idiots like the ones you mentioned, airlines will carry either handcuffs or the little plastic zip locks I think they are called

  2. As an aside, it's impossible to open most aircraft doors when pressurized, as the pressure forces the door shut- so a person can not open it.

  3. yes they do on BA flights (3 sets)

  4. No they don't use handcuffs but a plastic device called Air Restrain Device. They are used to restrain unruly or aggressive drunk passengers. its a strong plastic material and you can make it tight enough interlocking each other on the hands of the violator. it does work cuz i have seen it with my own eyes.

  5. i assume it depends on if the captain is called Max Mosley ;-)

  6. Yes they do... and I can tell you that almost every cockpit crewmember I know now is carrying nylon "zip ties" which make for EXCELLENT hand cuffs.. they cost about .10  and are easily used.

  7. yes on some flights, and I stress some flights, members of the flight crew and flight attendants will have been trained in dealing with problem passengers. These can include anything from drunks to the more serious event.

personally if some drunk is causing a problem he/she is then a danger to that aircraft and I would rather see them in handcuffs to protect me and the other passengers and also them selves.

  8. Yes some flight attendants have been trained to use handcuffs and to deal with difficult customers.  Airlines also have the ultimate weapon to land somewhere and deliver these idiots to the police.

Do not let one incident, such as this which was handled correctly with no bad outcome, put you off flying.  You are more likely to be knocked over by a bus than have an accident flying.

Have a great holiday and enjoy yourself

  9. yes
