Question:

Do chickens have hair?

My friend and I were having an argument. I said that they had hair somewhere on their body (I thought either on their stomachs or in their ears). We called her dad, an ear doctor, and he said they probably had hair cells in their ears. Do you agree with this?

  1. Birds have rictal bristles and filoplumes which both look very hair-like.  However, they are actually modified feathers, not hair.  In vertebrates, hair is strictly a mammalian trait.

People who talk about the "hair" left on a plucked chicken are usually referring to filoplumes.
