In days of old people in Ireland and Britian the people were all short. King Author was recorded to be the tallest man at the time and his bones measured 5'8" a giant. Most women were under 4' and then the vikings started to breed with the inhabitants creating a taller species.

The elves chose to hide in the woods and to only be seen at nite when they forrage for what they could steal from the farms. They wore green to blend into the woods. My grandfather from Ireland swore they were real but not magical, just a race of little people that were hunted down and killed (probably for stealing chickens) over the centuries. His mother's cook was 3'5" and said she was a descendent of the little people, the real owners of Ireland and enjoyed scaring him about all the spells she could cast if he didn't get out of the kitchen and leave her alone. He thinks the elves themselves started the magical rumours for self preservation. What better way when one is caught for stealing then to say, "I'll cast a spell on your children if you harm me?" He saw the elves a few times when he was coming home late as a young man, they did wear green and they were stealing the crops from his fathers field. That was a hundred years ago.

No, they were exterminated with pesticides during Operation Sauron's Revenge or OMR.  Now if we can find away to do away with those pesky Hobbits.
