Question:

Do it yourself fencing cost?

We are in need of a new 6 foot fence and want to know about how much to expect for a nice one. We dont want anything too fancy but something nice looking. We're both very handy and could probably handle building a fence ourselves. Does anyone have any advice? is it better to DIY or pay somone to do it. We have a pretty big yard so no matter what its a big job whether we did it ourselves or paid someone. thanks!

  1. Kjcge I have built two different wood fences in the past year.  One was made with 1 X 4 dogeared on top for dog run, and one for yard, that I used 1 X  2 which was 4 ft high  I think I had about $3.50 ft. in the  1 X  2 that included paint for the treated lumber.  It will cost about $6.00 ft. for 6 ft high fence and that is just a guess.  You can look at picture of it on Flickr.  If you like you can email and I will be glad to answer your questions if I can.

  2. I can say it really isn't that difficult with a good understanding of math and a strong back.

I would measure the lineal footage of your existing fence and go to Home depot/Lowe's.They can give you a cost breakdown for what you need.A string line, corner level, post hole digger would be the basic tools.

I wish to remind you that by law before you dig call for utility locates (USA).It will help keep you safe, avoiding extra costs and it's free.

    Good Luck

  3. I'm a handy man and have helped people build fences, etc.  My job as a handyman is to help people who have never done a task before to help them do it.  I make sure the fence is straight, level and placed right.  Put in concrete if that's an issue.  With a little help, not much money, you could get advise and help and finish the work off yourself.
